Department stores are gearing up for the biggest shopping season of the year. See what our data decodes about the retail landscape in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving.
Holiday Check-In: Lead up to Thanksgiving
The majority of observed department stores show positive YoY panel sales growth for the first three weeks of November. Some things to note:
- The first half of November of 2016 was generally weak for retail
- Out of the nine merchants, only Macy’s and J.C. Penney show negative in-store growth for 2017
- Burlington, Ross and TJ Maxx have tougher upcoming comps for the five weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas
- Out of six observed grocers, only Trader Joe’s shows a material acceleration in panel sales growth leading up to Thanksgiving 2017 vs. 2016, followed by Whole Foods
- Relative to Walmart, Amazon and Target, Best Buy holds its market share in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving
