Mulan and Disney+
With U.S. movie theaters just now reopening from COVID closures, Disney took the unusual step of releasing its live action summer blockbuster Mulan as a digital-only download. Here we looked at whether Mulan’s release drove new subscriptions to streaming service Disney+, which is required in addition to the purchase price of the film.
End-of-period subscribers grew in spurts with gross-adds spiking around the holiday season, the start of lockdown, and school closures in late March, and later a sharp spike around July 4th and the end of school term. Lastly, we only saw a modest bump in gross-adds around Labor Day and the release of Mulan in early September.
It will be interesting to see how season two of fan favorite The Mandalorian fares in contrast when released in late October.
