Google Gemini sees limited early customer growth against ChatGPT, Midjourney

About 1.9% of paying AI Tools customers used Google Gemini in May 2024 according to Earnest credit card data. That means Google Gemini trails most major AI Tools services by customer count, including Anthropic (2.7%), Quillbot (3%), ElevenLabs (3.2%), Midjourney (10.7%), and ChatGPT (70.8%).
Google Gemini was relatively late to the paid AI Tools market, and launched its paid service in February 2024 as ChatGPT was already winning share amongst users who also paid for services GitHub, Zapier, Midjourney, and Twilio. Early movers Anthropic and ChatGPT also retained over 70% of paid customers in their first 3 quarters, more than double most other services and making them more difficult to unseat.
Still, Google has made inroads in the quickly consolidating market. Earnest data shows that differentiated AI tools, especially ones with strong visualization programs like Midjourney and Leonardo.AI, have been able to defend and grow their share of wallet in the face of ChatGPT. Google Gemini will have to provide a meaningfully differentiated service to gain share among early adopters who have already largely subscribed to ChatGPT.
