Frown Direct Club?
With Zoom calls causing us all to be more self conscious, and potentially driving increases in cosmetic dentistry, we reviewed growth trends for the teledentistry platform SmileDirectClub.
Our data shows growth slow from its >100% peak in early 2019, bouncing around the low 40% range before dropping to -11% in March last year and the US outbreak of COVID. Sales then picked up again, rising to 18% in July, possibly aided by the first round of stimulus checks. Growth then dropped again, bottoming out at -20% in January this year, before rocketing up to 20% in March, again coinciding with another stimulus round—rather than continued remote work and Zoom-related self-image issues.
April saw a sharp negative drop, and that’s lapping weakness in April last year at the start of the outbreak. The next few months will likely reveal whether the re-opening of the US is beneficial or detrimental to DTC cosmetic dentistry.
