Expedia’s travel share stabilizes as online booking platform growth offsets VRBO weakness

Expedia accounted for 9.7% of US travel spending across major airlines, cruises, hotels, and online travel agencies from January 1st to July 18th, 2024 according to Earnest credit card data. This represents a slight increase from its 9.5% share of travel spending in 2023, and suggests that the multi-brand travel conglomerate could be reversing three years of consecutive travel share loss.

VRBO, Expedia’s home rental brand, still represents the largest share of sales, 41.5% in 2024 compared to 36.0% for Expedia. But overall home rental sales continue to fall relative to the post-Covid travel craze.
