DoorDash has dominated the domestic delivery aggregator market over the past four years, growing mostly at the expense of GrubHub. DoorDash increased its market share among delivery aggregators in the US from 14% in January 2018 to 48% in October 2020 (comparable to the 17% and 50% market share, respectively, noted by the company), and now has roughly 55%. Meanwhile, Uber Eats gained less than a percentage point in market share since January 2018, and Postmates (acquired in Dec. ‘20) lost 5 pts. GrubHub, which had the largest market share in early 2018 (~38%), lost 28 pts over that period.
DoorDash’s success was driven by the highest retention rates in the industry. Subscribers to the company’s DashPass product reached all time highs at the end of 2Q22. Those DashPass members are key, as they make 5.2 transactions each month in comparison to just 4.5 transactions by non-DashPass members.
DoorDash remains the market leader in the restaurant delivery aggregator space, but a select few restaurants make up an outsized number of sales. Download the full report for more information on the state of DoorDash.
