Delivery service adoption may be contagious

Since 3Q20, first time DoorDash and Instacart customers outspent non-customers by more than 10% in YoY terms at the peer platform over the following twelve-month period, according to Earnest Analytics’ Orion transaction data. While both delivery providers benefited from consumer adoption of the peer platform, Instacart’s sales lift from first time DoorDash customers relative to non-customers was more pronounced suggesting restaurant delivery may be more contagious for Instacart utilization. Regardless, this trend of outperformance among first time delivery customers indicates aggregate delivery service appetite likely increases as consumers begin to use various delivery platforms, creating a halo effect for the industry as a whole.
