Anthropic gains share in paid AI market

There’s a new high growth AI tool on the block. Anthropic grew to the 7th largest AI platform by sales just three months after launching its premium offering, according to Earnest credit card data (chart below). Anthropic displaced multi-year paid AI platform veterans like MURF.AI, Pictory, Leonardo.ai, Writesonic, Replit, Copy.ai, and others for the spot. Still, Anthropic lags RunwayML, Looka, VEED.IO, and Quillbot in terms of share by sales, not to mention the AI behemoths ChatpGPT and Jasper AI, with 82% and 5% of the market, respectively.

AI sales skyrocketed beginning January 2023, when ChatGPT released their freemium product. Since then, ChatGPT has been the fastest growing platform in terms of sales with their popular $20 per month plan and text based product aimed at addressing a more comprehensive set of use cases. This lower price point and broader appeal helped unseat previous AI market leader Jasper AI, originally priced at $49 per month and targeted towards professional users. 

Jasper AI caters to users looking for both image and text generation, while Anthropic’s platform is much more similar to ChatGPT in that it focuses on generative text. The newcomer’s rise could pose a more direct threat to OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform than Jasper AI did.
