Amazon’s first Big Spring Sale, early Easter provide a slight lift in spend

Amazon’s first Big Spring Sale from March 20th to the 25th generated a 3.1% lift in sales vs the average trailing four weeks, according to Earnest credit card data. The result represents a modest acceleration from the seasonal lift of that same week of March in the previous two years, when Amazon did not have a spring sale. Easter was 9 days earlier this year than in 2023, which may have also led to increased shopping and gifting on the Amazon platform during the Big Spring Sale week.
Amazon sales have become more frequent in recent years, lifting gross merchandise volume compared to average weeks to varying degrees–Amazon’s October 10th to 11th 2023 Prime Bid Deal Day generated a 23% lift according to Earnest credit card data. Still, the timing of the Amazon Big Spring Sale could have provided a boost to results towards the end of the retailer’s first fiscal quarter of 2024.
