Furniture Store Visit Recovery Lags in West, Leads in Southeast
As of the three-year anniversary of Covid-19 restrictions in the US, visits to home furnishings stores remain well below pre-pandemic levels, according to Earnest Foot Traffic location data. The Southeast, home to some of the fastest growing states like Florida, is the closest to its pre-pandemic levels, -5% Yo3Y. The West, which includes states with major Covid-19 immigration like California, is the least recovered, -5% Yo3Y. Despite widely publicized flight from states like New York, the Northeast, was the second most recovered region, -8% Yo3Y.
Foot traffic to national home furnishings brands including HomeGoods, Crate & Barrel, At Home, IKEA, and Restoration Hardware, recovered unevenly across geographies, with the West and Southwest underperforming the rest of the country until late 2022. Overall visits recovery has steadily converged since uneven reopenings prompted surges in furniture shopping beginning in 2020.
